In this series of articles, Sakuga City's contributor team list the anime that they are most looking forward to in the upcoming Fall season. Here are J4sm1n4's top picks.
Black Clover (TV)
Studio: Studio Pierrot
Director: Tatsuya Yoshihara
Writer: Yuuki Tabata
From the summary, this anime seems to be a typical shonen anime. Although, the whole “I want to be wizard king” makes me think of Naruto. I heard rumors that Black Clover is basically a copy of Naruto, but I do hope those rumors are wrong. The main character kinda looks like Naruto; Black Clover and Naruto are even made by the same studios, so we shouldn’t expect to see too much when it comes to originality. At least shonen anime are known for their crazy, awesome battle scenes, so I guess it has that much going for it. Plus the fact that Studio Pierrot animation is pretty cool.
On the other hand, my friend loves Black Clover manga and she only reads yaoi, so I guess we fujioshis will get enough fan service to ship wars over this. Other than that, my guess is that it will be an ordinary shonen anime.
Kekkai Sensen & Beyond
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Supernatural
Director: Shigehito Takayanagi
Writer: Yasuhiro Nightow
Well, I don’t know what to expect from this one. I mean season one was so unpredictable. It pretty much ended where questions were left unanswered but still, I wasn’t expecting season two at all. And now it’s here. I hope all of the characters from season 1 make a comeback. I mean, I want William back! Anyway, first season had either a hit or miss approach, by that I mean you either like it or find it annoying. There is no doubt in my mind that the producers will use the same tactic now.
Half of the season will be going between interesting and foolish episodes and at the end they will rush the events until the last culmination point. I hope in this season we finally find out what happened to Leonardo's sister. I don’t want them to create some new villain out of nowhere. I doubt there will be a season 3, so I hope they answer all of our questions this season, so that we can live happily ever after. Well, at least, so we don’t have to read the manga…
Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara
Genre: Food, Comedy
Studio: J.C. Staff
Director: Yoshitomo Yonetani
Writer: Yuuto Tsukuda
Third season of Shokugeki no souma!!! The first season was a hit while the second was rushed and they killed it (not in a good way). I hope the producers learned their lesson and won’t try to push in as much as they can in a 12 episode anime format. It might not have the most interesting story, but it’s unique and gets fans glued to the screen. Plus, who doesn’t love some foodgasm!
The animation and music in the previous seasons were top notch, so I’m expecting nothing less this time around. I’m pretty sure we will finally get to meet all of top ten seats in the school and finally be introduced to Nakiris background story in Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara. I’m really excited to find out more about Nakiri, because even though she is supposed to be one of the main characters, we don’t know that much about her. Anyway, from the point of the story, I think this season should be great, but the problem lies with the directors. I hope they do justice to the story.
Genre: Action, Magic
Director: Susumu Kudou
Writer: Takahashi Masada
Well, this has an interesting story that intrigued me. However, I have my doubts about it. From the summary it seems to have a dark story, but it’s based on a visual novel and we all know they usually try to push as many routes as possible into one anime, in turn, ruining it completely. The upside is that this anime will have 18 episodes so it will have the time to nicely develop everything. The question we should ask is if they will manage to use every episode wisely. The studio behind Dies Irae is A.C.G.T. I haven’t encountered many of their works, but from what I've watched, I would describe them as mediocre in both story and animation/art style. In the PV the animation and art style seemed good, but that’s only the PV. We will see how the real thing looks soon enough.
The trailer also showed us a lot of cute girls. Why does that matter, you ask? Because visual novels are usually about romance too and have multiple routes each with a different girl. So, my concern is that the anime will turn into some cliché romance or harem story with the MC choosing some unlikable girl in the end… This anime just screams danger in my opinion, so if it overcomes those alert warnings it will be a blast!
Love Live! Sunshine!! 2nd Season
Genre: Music, Slice of Life
Director: Kazuo Sakai
Writer: Hajime Yatate
Why I’m waiting for this one? I’m asking that myself every day. I love music anime and that’s a fact. And I love, Love Live. However 'Love Live Sunshine', apart from cute girls dancing and singing, didn’t have anything original. It was a straight up copy paste from Love Live School Idol Project. But, it’s a light anime with good music and cute girls, so it doesn’t annoy you when you can’t find anything original. It doesn’t deal with serious problems like world war. This anime is for kawaii-moments lovers.
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Psychological
Director: Keiichi Satou, Shuhei Yabuta
Writer: Hiroya Oku
I’m 100% sure this is going to be an amazing anime. Not sure whether I'll like the grandpa that’s having a middle age crisis but I’m sure I will love the anime. The studio that’s giving us this treat is MAPPA. I loved almost every anime they made but there are some exceptions of course. From visuals to soundtrack it’s almost always one hell of a ride. Ok now back to the anime. It seems to have a dark psychological story. So we will get some wild gore scenes! I just hope they don’t plan to fit 85 chapter of manga material in just 12 episodes. That would suck.
Code:Realize: Sousei no Himegimi
Genre: Adventure, Romance, Fantasy
Director: Hideyo Yamamoto
Yay another reverse harem! In this one the girl seems to be actually doing something. I love reverse harem anime! But, usually since they are adapted from Visual Novels the girl doesn’t even talk a lot… and if she does speak it’s usually to say something supportive for the guys… I can’t feel that they are alive. They don’t have personalities. Also I’m excited to see how this is going to go. If they don’t start to sing in the middle of a battle like in Dance with the Devils I’m pretty sure I will enjoy it.
I’m not expecting this to be a masterpiece or anything. I know reverse harem anime aren’t that good generally. They are enjoyable. I don’t think this one is going to be an exception. So anyone who dislikes plot holes and cute boys should not watch this. While if you love cute husbando types after one girl, you should definitely check this out.
The iDOLM@STER Side M
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Sound Director: Takatoshi Hamano
Finally The idolmaster side M. I have been dying to watch this since Jupiter appeared on The Idolmaster! There are other idol anime with males only, but they are either really bad like Tsukiuta The Animation or reverse harem like Uta no pri… The original Idolmaster is really good. It’s slice of life and the story is simple, but it’s quite relatable. So I hope they don’t disappoint us here too.
Anyway, this is going to be great! Finally we will find out what happens to Jupiter! Cute boys will dance and sing and we will ship!! Their stories will move our stone hard hearts! They will fight for their dreams and we will be cheering them on from the sidelines!!
