    Actually, I was shocked that American poorer people truly do live in the type of third world squalor that is shown in TV shows and movies.

    The housing in cardboard gangsters is true to life on what a council estate looks like.

    They demolished the notorious Ballymun flats years ago and rehoused the people there. Those were probably a "ghetto" alright.

    Theres a high speed rail line being built here and whens its complete, an absolute shithole of an area is basically gonna become hipster central. Time to invest in brick and mortar peepz. Now wheres my liquid cash....

    Is that movie any good?

    @Shannon Apple Ghettos in the usa are worse than some third world counties people get shot everyday happens around my school all the time. It's like an open prison with guns. I was just shocked I undersitmated what kind of place Ireland is but I wonder if people are just as bad in the usa
    @Oh Snape yeah decent movie

    I haven't seen the movie, just the trailers, but you must remember this is fiction, not fact. Gangland crime happens in every country in the world and generally, the majority of citizens are never going to witness anything. Ireland is no exception. I have never known anyone or personally known of anyone involved in anything like that. You know?

    Limerick City was kinda bad though when I was growing up, so much so that it was nicknamed "Stab City." I had a friend who lived near it. But... the gangs pretty much killed each other off in the end. Then it all came to a head when some innocent lad was murdered in a case of mistaken identity. Thousands took to the streets in peaceful protest. Believe it or not, it actually worked. The killings stopped.

    crime in ireland seems to be much lower in general compared to the US and is along the lines the same with most western european countries which is also lower. quite clearly even if the USA is the richest country in the world it doesnt seem to be the answer to everything.

    Well it also has a very high gdp per capita and household income but yeah I've seen that. I thnk its the cost of living like Healthcare and education that make it so difficult for everyone

    The cost of living in Ireland is higher than that of the USA, believe it or not. I have real life friends who live there and have said so. Price of food here is ridiculous. Tax is very high too. What helps is that it's illegal for a landlord to put a tenant into a house that isn't above a certain standard. There are strict laws around these things.

    Of course, on saying that, we have the same problem with homelessness as everywhere else, especially in the capital. Also, "invisible" homeless who are put up in emergency accommodation (hotels/hostels) while they wait for the council to get them a house. We do have a housing crisis here currently where there isn't enough affordable housing available.

    worth noting that the median wealth list you shared isnt really an indication of day to day purchasing power. I'd reckon a lot of that list is mostly swayed by the housing prices. AUstralia has insane housing prices so the majority of the wealth people have is because of their houses. which is really just sitting wealth since they cant do much but live in there. germany is low because people rent there.

    i say the living costs in the USA is high cuz of education and healthcare which are necessities almost. and even everyday stuff is comparatively expensive.
