A new trailer for the upcoming FLCL 2 and FLCL 3 animation projects was unveiled by Production I.G at Anime Expo.

Toonami is streaming a trailer as well on its Facebook page: here (Video is region locked in some countries).

Here's the official art for season 2 posted by the project's Character Designer Chikashi Kubota (via Twitter)

In another surprise, Japanese entertainment news website Comic Natalie is reporting that in Japan, the two sequels will be two theatrical anime projects, with the first film set to open in Japan in 2018. However the anime is still slated as two six-episode television series in the U.S.

Both seasons are slated for 2018 with a break in the middle. The two seasons will have completely separate stories.

Here's the official summary by Adult Swim:

Just in case you haven't watched the first season, here's the summary in spoiler tags.

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.

But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?

Are any of the Gainax crackheads who worked on original on board for any of this? If I'm watching random I want it OD'ing on a speedball while a guitar solo screams its away across the cosmos.

This is too lit, didn't even suspect FLCL to continue after so many years. I'm always down for surprises tho.

Sounds like a belated april fools.

This show was cult as hell back in the day. We had an A4 club called 'FLCL Slutsweeboez' club. Or was it FLCL Hoez Club thing. Something like that.

Character Designer is the same. The Pillows will be working on the music but the director is new. The director for FLCL season 2 was the chief director for Psycho Pass.

New visual for the upcoming season was released. It's originally slated as a two film anime project but in the US it'll be a "two six-episode television series" as revealed earlier. Not sure cutting up a 2hr something film into six parts would do the flow any good but they've figured out something I guess. Also even better if the ED is a guitar fest by "the Pillows"

Oh my, making a sequel to a cult classic with a good number of fans is always a risky move. Let's hope that they don't disappoint.

I'd be more keen if the whole thing didn't feel so forced. FLCL ended pretty conclusively.

They don't seem to have put their best stuff in this trailer, which is odd.

The English dub trailer's neatly done.

It seems that this will not be a direct continuation from the original. Probably a decade or more down the line, since it'd be wrong to assume timelines based on Haruko's looks. It's more like a cycle that'll be repeating itself. And some extra features added in for good measure.

Adult Swim's Toonami block has announced on their FB page that the planned English-subtitled streams of both FLCL Progressive and FLCL Alternative are delayed until November. The post stated the delay is "out of respect for our Japanese partners," and is in order "to align with the release of the Japanese language versions." All of the episodes of both series will be made available "on all Adult Swim platforms" online in November.

FLCL Progressive is up on Adult Swim's website: https://www.adultswim.com/videos/flcl

FLCL ain't my thing so, no haven't watched it.

An anime music video for the FLCL compilation films was streamed. The video features The Pillows' theme songs for the films, "Star overhead" and "Spiky Seeds." The video includes footage from the films and from The Pillows' United States concert tour held in July.
