The apple pippin?? I never heard of this. I clicked on one of those "sponsored" links on yahoo and bumbed into this. So I looked it up on youtube and found it interesting.

So what failed tech is on your fond memories list? i know the virtual boy is one of those favorites people always bring up. What else is out there that you recall as being really really bad but now its funky retro tech?

My mom used to have an apple newton when in the mid 90s. I do not remember much from it though but she stopped using it after awhile.

One of my friends got a zune that worked like crap and he complained all the time about it. He could never turn it off, it sucked.

Self-checkout kiosks. Many customers with 10 items or less see it, only a few would actually use it in order to clog up registers 1 and 4. Then we'll end up having to call assistance on register 2 because people are afraid of those kiosks. Then we tell some of the customers that the self-checkout lines are open and usable, but what we really want to tell them is "you shitheads, go use this perfectly functioning machine and stop making our day worse than it already is." Then a 50 year old guy starts complaining about how he has to show his ID in order to buy booze. \

Wait what was the topic again?

@narika - hey I've still got my zune. It was just fine as a player in my opinion but i use a sandisk sport clip now because its smaller than the repurposed android phone I was using earlier..

But the newton is interesting. Was it for work.

@StrawHats - well if i only have a few items i'll try to do the selfcheckout. Though if I have more than a handful I prefer a clerk.

@yoda313 my mom used it for work and I am pretty sure she used to have her book list for the books she wanted. She reads so much she would read in checkout lines at the commissary and if anyone know how that is you know it can be an hour or so wait after payday. She now uses her samsung phone for most things. He must have gotten a bad zune then.

@StrawHats I always use the self checkout when available because no one ever uses them and it is faster, I dislike lines and waiting.

Wow, never heard of the Apple console. You probably had to buy an official Apple employee to come down and blow into the cartridge rub cd on jean leg if it started playing up.

Does Dreamcast count? Maybe not. Nintendo CD became Playstation. Neo Geo CD? Would've saved me a fortune in Arcade coinage.

@narika thanks for info. I'm not saying zune was perfect but it wasn't trash by any means.

@snap - I think Dreamcast is more cult worthy than failed tech. Yes sega disappeared from hardware after that but it wasn't an ugly duckling exactly.

I think neogeo would count. Or the Philips CDI game system. That had the awful link game where link actually spoke right? The only speaking link I like is the cartoon from the super Mario Bros super show.

Put me down for the Virtual Boy. Rented it from Blockbuster once (way way back when they even rented consoles), and spent long hours burning permanent red lines into my vision. I still see red-lined Mario Tennis printed over everything I look at. Good times.

dreamcast would fall in the underrated category. And failed in what terms? technical perspective or sales. I own a zune hd it's great for what it does, better than the ipod.

Zune hd? I don't remember that designation, the hd.

When I say failed I mean forgotten and or despised. Windows Vista and windows 8 would both count in that respect. Though I think the hate on both os were a bit overstated.

Certainly both sales and technical deficiencies are somewhat independent factors. But failure generally means it didn't do well and faded into history.

Whoa whoa whoa. Don't put 8 in the same level as Vista. Vista is garbage and I say "is" because I still own a desktop that runs Vista. Also, I have a laptop that runs 8.1 and it has yet to cause me irritation on the level of Vista. I'm saying this in assumption of you including 8.1 in your mention of "Windows 8."

I do know 8.1 is better. But few know that it seems.

Mini cds from Sony never caught on. Were they bigger in Japan?

I still use my Zune HD to this day. Phenomenal battery life on that thing. Provided it's not playing a song at the time, it could probably stay in the 'sleep' mode for months at a time. That thing is built to last, I've probably dropped it a few hundred times at this point. The software is the only real fault I have with it, the layout is great, but it's always been a tad buggy, it's no worse than iTunes is at any given time though.

same here. So many drops and still holds on. I'd say software wise and UI design it's superior to itunes as well and much more intuitive and useful. friend told me you can't even download the songs you have on your mp3 to your computer via itunes.

My fave failed tec is probably betamax. Man those were the days. Watching rented inspector gadget and disney/don bluth cassettes. It was a simpler time. But just like everyrhing else good with the world men ruined it and we got stuck with VHS instead. Thanks to y'alls insatiable need for accessable in home porn batamax and its better playback quality was lost forever.

    Ahahahhahahahahaaahaha!!!!!

You guys clearly never had to deal with the horror that was windows ME.

Omg there are no words for how awful that os was. It crashed at least once a day and multitasking was entierly impossible. Thank God I got a decent xp computer after that.

me? yep had one from a garage sale for awhile. Not my main machine though.

Note though the one good thing ME did was introduce RECOVERY MODE. Save points in an OS? OH HELL YEAH! Of course ditching dos was weird at the time. Relegating it to a prompt?

Yeah, because without it you'd need a new OS/reinstall on every bootup. I swear I could make it blue screen by just giving the monitor a stern look.
