    Lowdown:

High school student Hodaka Morishima leaves his home on an isolated island and moves to Tokyo, but he immediately becomes broke. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds a job as a writer for a shady occult magazine. After he starts his job, the weather has been rainy day after day. In a corner of the crowded and busy city, Hodaka meets a young girl named Hina Amano. Due to certain circumstances, Hina and her younger brother live together, but have a cheerful and sturdy life. Hina also has a certain power: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky.

Makoto Shinkai is credited with the original work, and is also directing and writing the film's scripts. Masayoshi Tanaka is designing the characters, Atsushi Tamura is the animation director, and Hiroshi Takiguchi is the art director.

The film will open in Japan on July 19. Shinkai has confirmed that the film will get a worldwide release.

The first teaser trailer, previewing RADWIMPS' new song "Ai ni Dekiru Koto wa Mada Aru Kai", was streamed.

Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) sold 1,159,020 tickets to earn 1,643,809,400 yen (about US$15.22 million) in its first three days. The film earned 28.6% more in its first three days compared to Shinkai's Your Name film, which earned 1,277,960,000 yen (about US$12.51 million at the time) in its first three days.

Shinkai confirmed that the film will get a worldwide release, and releases have already been decided for North America, Europe, Asia, and South America. GKIDS has licensed the film for North America, and will give the film an "awards qualifying" theatrical run this year before a wider screening with subtitles and an English dub in early 2020.

Japan has submitted Weathering With You for consideration in the Best International Feature Film category at the 92nd Academy Awards. The film is the first anime that Japan has submitted in the category since Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke in 1998. The award was known as Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film until this year.

Nice to hear the film is doing well. I really loved Your Name so I have high hopes for this one. I'll probably scoop up the blu-ray once it's available in the US.

I still have not seen your name yet and I'm surprised he already has new movie out so quickly. I think I find this more interesting than even the last one.
Wonder what else they've submitted non anime wise. But it's interesting to know thanks this movie I feel looks better than your name even though I haven't seen it just based on the trailer and premise.

Watched it at a film festival yesterday. Was alright. Got that excitement running when the song Great Escape hit that dolby atmos and the two of them were falling from the sky.

Apart from that nothing special on a personal note. I've grown accustomed to Shinkai's formula and his movies don't excite me from the perspective of the plot.

The last one that felt really great was The Garden of Words. I didn't even find Your Name all that great.

Had a chance to watch this for free at a film festival so didn't pass up the chance.

In my opinion, Weathering With You was decent at environmental drama. As in it depicted tone and mood aptly with the weather and special effects on screen. That was the main draw for me. The sound track complemented the film well, but I kept getting frustrated watching the characters. I guess it was going for a tragedy-light tone where likeable characters experience the repercussions of their decision. But after things when dire things kind of went well. I think the movie wanted you to feel better than you felt going when leaving. The Rain Girl plot felt somewhat unresolved to me.
