This community has recently experienced a bit of friction concerning our Current Events sub-forum. After a long discussion in the Feedback sub-forum and plenty of discussion among the staff, we've decided on how we will process with CE and how we will communicate our intent to the rest of the community.

I've just posted a new sticky in the sub-forum to outline our intentions for the section and how we'll go about moderating it. Please go give it a read and, since it's locked, come back to this thread if you have any comments, questions, or feedback. I expect some interest in our decisions and welcome a discussion on how we'll be moving forward.

To break it down to its essence, the sticky emphasizes our desire for varied and spirited discussion on world events but clarifies our stance on two important topics; disrespect and contempt, and harmful and hateful speech. And while this amounts to us simply being more diligent about our already-existing site rules it also makes some important distinctions about what will be tolerated in the section and what will not. Much of the conflict that has arisen from CE is due to the increasingly hostile partisan politicking all around the world, especially in the United States as of late, and the majority it can be easily avoided if we remember that we are a community. We came here because we love anime, video games, cartoons, film, television, comic books, and other aspects of geek culture but we stayed for the people and our interactions with them.

We, the staff, are aware that we haven't always upheld this principle either. And while we look inward to ensure that we are enabling a rich and nuanced view of the world through the tiny lens that is the CE section we ask that you all treat other better, too. Try to see the person behind the argument and think about the kind of good and harm you're capable of with that keyboard in front of you.

Thank you for you continued support of this community. Please comment here if you have any thoughts on the matter.

No but seriously, I see this as a very good thing. Like you can talk about politics, or whatever it might be, everyone should just remember to present themselves with control and thought. A thought or an argument put out with shitty and lazy way, is just infuriating. That way you don't put the conversation forward, probably don't convince your counterpart about anything, and just make the atmosphere of discussion more childlike and shittier. With overall more better and elegant discussion, we have a way better chance to understand from each other, and learn from the process. Isn't that one of the reasons why we argument and discuss various topics? That's the way I see it. :coffee:

More dialogue, less debate. If you cannot get to the root, you cannot bear any fruit. Mutual respect is not the same as tolerance, but both are incredibly important and should be cultivated in this community.
